* Pendulum clocks always need to be set up on a flat ground or surface. This seems to be very basic but it is critical for its functioning.
When setting the clock against the wall you may realize that the floor carpeting is uneven. Or possibly the the floor is not uniform next to the wall.
If the case leans to one side and is not vertical it is essential to get the clock vertical.
* Longcase Clock Pendulums have front and back sides that are different. The front face of the pendulum is in most cases the the flat polished side.
The pendulum and bob remain without touching any side of the case. If it comes into contact with the case it could be that the case leans away from vertical.
* The weights that power the mechanism should stand free of impediments. They should collide with the pendulum or the clock walls as they descend.
* When you start the pendulum moving check for a steady tick sound. It should be occuring regularly.
If you hear an irregular sound it is often because the case is not standing up straight. Try to straighten it out and do whatever adjustments are needed.
* When you adjust the time do not move the hands backwards more than just a few minutes. And under no circumstances move the hands back across the number twelve.
It is alright to turn the hands forwards. When moving over the twelve o clock mark pause till the clock is done with striking the bell at the hour mark before you move on.
* If the grandfather clock goes too fast increase or decrease the length of the pendulum arrangement.
Step up the length to cut back on the clock speed. Shorten it to to quicken the pace.
